With roots in the traditional American folk song tradition, "In The Pines (Where Did You Sleep Last Night)" is officially a song without a creator. It has been recorded by the likes of folk legend Lead Belly, bluegrass artist Bill Monroe, late '80s and early '90s grunge juggernaut Kurt Cobain (as the last song of Nirvana's live album 'MTV Unplugged in New York'), and now Clawbeck Larson.
lyrics
My girl, my girl, oh don't you lie to me.
Tell me where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine,
I would shiver the whole night through.
My girl, my girl, oh where will you go?
I'm goin' where the cold wind blows.
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine,
I would shiver the whole night through.
Well, her husband, he was a hard-workin' man,
Just about a mile from here.
Mhm, his head was found in a drivin' wheel,
Mhm, but his body never was found.
My girl, my girl, oh don't you lie to me.
Tell me, where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine,
I would shiver the whole night through.
My girl, my girl, oh where will you go?
I'm goin' where the cold wind blows.
Mhm, in the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine,
Mhm, I would shiver, oh... the whole night through.
